PREFACE

What are our goals of today? Today at University of Utrecht we will have a class about innovation in product software and Thinking out of the box.


INTRO

This generation of students has a great starting point. They are very well educated, young, unbiassed, and grown up with technology. This group can make the difference, this group can develop the new next Google.


This clas is about entrepeneurship in product software development. What does it take to become a succesfull entrepeneur? A small part of the Exact Software story is used which have interesting similarities to the Google story.

Yes, it requires skills, education, knowledge (SEK), network and money (NAM). But above all: Vision, passion, dedication, conviction (VIPADEC) AND Thinking out of the box (TOOB). This course mainly contributes to SEK. About entrepeneurship in general a lot of SEK is available. This class should contribute a little to the TOOB and help developing a vision on how YOU want YOUR company to look like.


Some generally accepted principles of choosing focus and developing disciplines of marketleaders.

  • Customer intimacy

  • Operational excellence

  • Product leadership


It would not be surprising many will focus on product leadership. Most important statement in this context is Companies should seek to excel in one and to be competent or better in the others.

To many business initiative are middle of the road. Google and Apple have set the todays standard. You have to push your limits.


If you look at the Exact story it is interesting to see that Exact was not even that innovative at that time. People predicted to Exact had no chance. The market was already devided amongst 4 players and we were with to many to turn it into a success. How did Exact make the difference: Excel in Customer Intimicy and we were better in operational excellence and product leadership. But at the end of the day it remained standard bookkeeping.
